10 Instant Energy Boosters
- Go for a walk
If you want to feel instantly energized, get some sunlight. A brisk 20-minute walk can reduce the production of stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline by as much as 45 percent and leave you feeling upbeat for more than an hour afterwards, according to one study. Another good reason to take a lunch break!
- Snack on protein
Chocolate may seem like a quick fix when you’re feeling tired, but it can play havoc with your blood-sugar levels. If you crave sugar in the afternoon, eat three meals a day and have a high-protein snack (such as nuts) mid-morning and mid-afternoon to avoid energy dips.
- Stroke a dog
Studies show that stroking a pet can help lower blood pressure and can also prompt the release of “feel good” hormones serotonin and oxytocin too.
- Sniff some peppermint
There’s nothing like the fresh, clean smell of peppermint to make you feel bright and awake. Studies show that sniffing peppermint can increase the brain’s production of alpha waves, electrical impulses that can produce a happier mood, in a matter of minutes.
- Drink more water
Even mild dehydration can zap your energy and leave you feeling weak, dizzy and unable to think straight. Keep your fluid levels topped up by sipping water throughout the day. Thirst indicates dehydration has already occurred, so don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink.
- Have a laugh
Laughter is one of the best energy boosters. When we laugh it triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. Spend time with friends who make you laugh or watch your favorite comedy show on TV.
- Go for bright colors
Colors have a surprising influence on our mood and energy levels. Surround yourself with bright colors, such as a bright yellow umbrella, or wear bright clothes, such as a red shirt. Warm colors (red, orange and yellow) are the most energizing.
- Stand up and move
Studies show that sitting for long periods of time increases the risk of premature death from heart disease, stroke and cancer. The body’s vessels tend to constrict during inactivity, zapping of you energy and making you feel tried. Stand up and walk around for a few minutes. Do 30 jumping jacks and you’ll really get the blood flowing and heart pumping.
- Eat almonds
Nuts aren’t just packed with protein. Almonds in particular are a great source of the mineral magnesium, which is believed to boost energy, as well as help improve muscle functioning, heart health and protect against memory loss.
- Coenzyme Q10
Found in the mitochondria of cells, Coenzyme Q10 is essential for producing adenosine triphosphate, which transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism. If you often feel tired and have a less than healthy diet or are on certain medications, you may be deficient.
