Let’s talk oil’s, specifically Coconut and Olive oil and what are the differences?
Which one is best?
Or where to use both of them?
First thing first, my philosophy about health and for that matter many other subjects is that balance and moderation is an excellent way to look at your health!
I could reference many experts, researchers, and historians on their experience(s), and final realization on the concept and benefits of balance and moderation. But I’m going to list just this one person for today:
King Solomon writes in Ecclesiastes 3 “Everything has its time.”
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
I don’t want to over simplify Ecclesiastes 3 to the idea that its meaning is just about health, or for that matter only balance and moderation so please enjoy reading the entire chapter!
Okay let’s talk about oils, and specifically the differences as it relates to heart health!
Which oil has more “good/healthy fat and bad fat?”
Which means: monounsaturated/ polyunsaturated fats and saturated fat
- 1 Tablespoon of olive oil contains 11 grams of healthy monounsaturated fat and 1 gram of polyunsaturated fat and 1 gram of saturated fat. And 1 Tablespoon of olive oil contains 120 calories
- 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil contains 0.1 grams of monounsaturated fat and 0.25 grams of polyunsaturated fat and 13 grams of saturated fat. And 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil contains 130 calories
Most of the saturated fats in coconut oil comes from lauric acid (LA). This particular acid increases both bad (LDL) & good (HDL) cholesterol. So because it does increase both cholesterols, and as side note cholesterol is not the enemy, coconut oil is also not a concern for adversely affecting your cholesterol numbers!
Okay so the DP/ND (Dan Prater, ND) summary is….when it comes to specifically heart health Olive Oil wins!!
