More and more of us are using both prescription medications and dietary supplements on a regular basis.

A recent study in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that 87% of US adults between the ages of 62 and 85 use one or more prescription medications, 38% use one or more non-prescription drugs, and 64% use at least one dietary supplement. Twenty-five percent of those who reported regular use of dietary supplements did not talk to their healthcare providers about their use of supplements, even though they had been advised to do so.

The JAMA Internal Medicine article identified potential adverse outcomes that can arise from combining specific prescription medications and some dietary supplements, though the risk is low. The potential limitations associated with using dietary supplements with prescription medications can be magnified, however, if patients do not communicate and collaborate with their healthcare providers to ensure that all supplements and medications are taken safely and appropriately for each patient’s specific health and wellness needs.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the US Congress define a dietary supplement as “a product (other than tobacco) that is intended to supplement the diet; contains one or more dietary ingredients (including vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and other substances) or their constituents; is intended to be taken by mouth as a pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid; and is labeled on the front panel as being a dietary supplement.”

Recent clinical studies suggest the ability to use dietary supplements to manage many aspects of health. Clearly this category encompasses numerous products and navigating it can be a challenge, but with a practitioner partnership, use and outcomes can be optimized.

As use of prescription medications and dietary supplements continues to grow, we know that safety, efficacy, and appropriate use are crucial. Clients and their healthcare providers can work together to ensure that clients’ health goals are met through clear communication, and safe recommendations..
